FR. VRAME RECEIVES TWO MAJOR HONORS AT CLERGY-LAITY
The Very Reverend Archimandrite Anton Vrame (MDiv 1989) received two major honors at the meeting of the National Forum of Church Musicians on July 5 during the Clergy-Laity Congress in New York City. First, the Forum presented Fr. Vrame with the prestigious Saint Romanos Medallion in recognition of his close collaboration with them over the fifteen years that he served as Director of the Archdiocesan Department of Religious Education. HCHC HOLDS 80th COMMENCEMENT
Hellenic College Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology conducted its 80th Commencement exercises on Saturday, May 21, in the Pappas Auditorium. All graduations provide cause for celebration, but this year’s was an especially joyous occasion, being the first in-person ceremony since 2019 due to Covid restrictions in 2020 and 2021. PAPPAS PATRISTIC INSTITUTE HOSTS MAJOR INTERNATIONAL COLLOQUIUM
The Pappas Patristic Institute at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology hosted a three-day Colloquium on the Mystagogy of St. Maximos the Confessor from April 28-30, 2022, that drew renowned patristic scholars from all over the world to present diverse perspectives on the work and related topics. HCHC RETIRES $5.3 MILLION MORTGAGE
Hellenic College Holy Cross has paid off the $5.3 million mortgage on the Barletta property, a seven-acre parcel of land adjacent to the main campus that was acquired in 2006 to provide opportunities for expansion and to protect against encroaching development. The retirement of the debt was made possible by a gift of $2.5 million from a most generous benefactor, the Honorable Michael Huffington, and by a matching gift of $2.5 million from the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, which had received a large bequest from the estate of Suzanne Mados. HOLY CROSS OFFERS FIRST ONLINE MASTER’S DEGREE PROGRAM
Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology has received approval by the New England Commission of Higher Education to offer a fully online Master of Theology (ThM) degree program. In a letter to HCHC President George M. Cantonis dated March 21, 2022, the Commission noted that the online version of the program, which has been offered in person on HCHC’s campus for almost forty years, will allow prospective students to pursue the ThM from anywhere in the world. HCHC ESTABLISHES HUFFINGTON ECUMENICAL INSTITUTE
Hellenic College Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology has announced the establishment of the Huffington Ecumenical Institute at Hellenic College Holy Cross. The mission of the Institute will be to foster dialogue between the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic and Episcopal Churches through programs, events, and other channels. HCHC will be solely responsible for its staffing and all aspects of its operation. The untimely passing of Fr. Antonios Papathanasiou is being mourned worldwide by everyone whose lives he touched in his 47 years. Fr. Antonios fell asleep in the Lord in Athens on March 29, 2022, following heart complications. Although he was descended from a long line of priests stretching back to 1750 and his father, Fr. Athanasios of blessed memory, was his beloved role model, Fr. Antonios’ path to the priesthood was a long yet enriching one. On March 10, 2022, the Maliotis Cultural Center of Hellenic College Holy Cross hosted the inaugural event of its next exhibit: “The Good Shepherds: Chief Metropolitans and Rabbis in the Face of Holocaust." HCHC RECEIVES $2.75 MILLION BEQUEST FROM THEOFILIS ESTATE
Hellenic College Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology has received a $2.75 million bequest from the estate and trust of Helen B. Theofilis of Clearwater, Florida. The bequest is the largest ever received by HCHC. The Basil and Helen Theofilis Charitable Fund for Hellenic Causes requests that $1 million of the Fund be used to permanently endow room and board scholarships for married seminarians at Holy Cross, and $1 million to permanently endow tuition and book scholarships for non-seminarian Hellenic College students.
